It’s not actually responding to the frequency of sound, just the loudness. Still cool, but it’s not a graphic equalizer at all. It needs bandpass filters in the circuit (which wouldn’t have been hard, I wonder why they didn’t do it).

I think the EL panel only has a few sections (4 or 5 maybe) that stretch horizontally across it to react properly to the volume level. Making it actually respond to the different frequencies would require a really big cable going to the EL panel.
